Ownership: CGU is owned by Insurance Australia Group Limited (IAG), which acquired it in 2003. With effect from 1 October 2025 the Federal Court approved the transfer of Insurance Australia Limited's intermediated insurance business to related company CGU Australia Pty Ltd (AFSL 700014, licensed 9 May 2025), so the insurer named on broker-sold CGU policies changed while the ultimate owner did not. Separately, direct Victorian CGU personal policies moved to Insurance Manufacturers of Australia Pty Limited (commencement dates on or after 31 July 2025).
CGU is the intermediary-focused insurance brand of Insurance Australia Group (IAG). Its products, which include business, trades, workers compensation, home, car and landlord insurance, are sold mainly through insurance brokers, underwriting agencies and business partners. IAG says CGU's history goes back to the 1860s and that it acquired the business in 2003.
The insurer behind a CGU policy now depends on how it was sold. For policies sold by brokers and underwriting agencies, and for all workers compensation, the insurer is CGU Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 62 004 478 960, AFSL 700014). This follows a Federal Court approved transfer of business from Insurance Australia Limited that took effect on 1 October 2025.
Certain personal policies sold directly in Victoria are issued by Insurance Manufacturers of Australia Pty Limited, and remaining CGU policies are issued by Insurance Australia Limited. All three insurers sit within IAG, alongside sister brands NRMA Insurance, WFI and ROLLiN'.
