How this site is compiled

This page explains where the information comes from and what its limits are.

Directory listings

Listings are built from two datasets published by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission on data.gov.au under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Australia licence: the AFS Licensee dataset and the AFS Authorised Representative dataset. ASIC updates them weekly, and this site reloads them weekly.

Who is included

  • Current AFS licensees whose licence conditions cover general insurance products and whose business is insurance: brokers, underwriting agencies and insurers.
  • Companies that those licensees have appointed as authorised representatives.

Who is left out

  • Individual people. The register lists many individual representatives, but this site publishes businesses only.
  • Banks, financial planners and fund managers that hold a general insurance authorisation alongside other business.
  • Point-of-sale distributors such as car dealers, travel agents and strata managers that sell a single insurance product as a sideline.
  • Anyone whose registration has ceased.

The filter is automatic and based on licence conditions and business names, so it can be wrong in both directions. Absence from this site does not mean a business is unlicensed. The ASIC register is the authoritative record.

What a listing shows

The name on the register, the licence or representative number, the licensee, the ABN, the registered locality and the start date. The register does not publish phone numbers, street addresses or websites, so none are shown. For authorised representatives, the public extract does not show which products each representative may deal in, only that its licensee covers general insurance.

Town and city pages

A business appears under the locality of its registered address. City pages group localities by postcode range, so boundaries are approximate. A business registered in one town may serve clients anywhere.

Brand and underwriter pages

Each brand page states who issues the brand's policies and who owns the brand. These facts are checked against the brand's own website and product disclosure documents, the underwriter's website, company announcements and regulator registers. The sources are listed on each page with the date last checked. Arrangements change, so always confirm the insurer named in the Product Disclosure Statement for the policy you are buying.

Guides and glossary

Guides are general information, written from regulator and government sources that are listed at the foot of each guide. They do not take your circumstances into account.

Corrections

If a listing or a statement is wrong, request a correction. Listings follow the ASIC register, so a change to the register flows through at the next weekly reload.
